Walking Ohenro Temple #1 - Temple #17

A 5-day journey scratching the surface of the 88-Temple Shikoku Pilgrimage. Originally said to be founded by the monk Kūkai, one of the most influential figures in Japanese History, this pilgrimage spans some 1,200 km and stretches across all four prefectures of Japan. This pilgrimage route will cover roughly 78 km in total and take guests through the fields, mountains, and small-town scenery of Tokushima Prefecture.
Day 1
In the morning you will meet your guide and then proceed to Bandō Station by rail. Afterwards, you will begin the walking pilgrimage and visit 6 temples located amid fields, valleys, and small-town scenery. The walking for this day is largely across flat ground with some small hills. The lodging for the evening will be at Temple #6 Anrakuji which has one of the older hot springs in Japan and offers guests a chance to take part in an evening Buddhist Ceremony.
Day 2
The second day of walking will bring you again into the agricultural heart of Tokushima Prefecture as well as to mountain top temples and across rivers. Despite some mountainous terrain, the walking for this day is still across largely flat ground. The lodging will be a local inn located near Temple #11 Fujīdera.
Day 3
From the morning, you will spend the day hiking the mountains of Tokushima on what some consider to be one of the most challenging stretches of the pilgrimage trail. After hiking up and down mountains, the lodging is a hot-spring equipped accommodation located in valley.
Day 4
After departing the lodging, you will walk through valleys and over hills until the scenery gradually changes back into the suburbs of Tokushima City. After visiting the final temple of the day, you will take a local train back to Tokushima City for the night.
Day 5
After checking-out of your hotel, you are free to head to the station and continue onto the next part of your journey in Japan.
