"Island Tranquility: A Three-Day Tapestry of Shikoku's Past and Present Artistry"

Out line

Over the course of three days, this immersive tour unfolds a captivating journey through Japan's cultural and natural wonders.

The adventure kicks off in the Bikan Historical Quarter of Kurashiki City, where well-preserved 17th-century Japanese architecture lines the canals, providing a nostalgic glimpse into the streets of late Edo Japan. Following this, the Marine Liner transports you to Takamatsu City, offering striking views of the Seto Bridge and its swirling blue waters, accentuating the region's historical remoteness.

Upon reaching Takamatsu City, a visit to the sprawling Ritsurin Garden awaits, showcasing classic Japanese architecture amidst green ponds, noble trees, and vibrant flowers. The garden tells the story of Takamatsu's former rulers through non-native plants, trees planted by nobles, and even an artificial waterfall. A tea ceremony in a renovated tea house overlooking the park invites you to savor the serenity that has been preserved for over 400 years. As the day concludes, a catamaran yacht sails you into the sunset over the Seto Sea, leading to your first night's stay on Naoshima.

The second day invites artistic exploration on Naoshima, starting with visits to various "art houses" that transform traditional homes into contemporary expressions of art. Following lunch at a local café, the Chichu Art Museum beckons, displaying contemporary works by artists such as James Turrell and Walter De Maria. Designed by the renowned self-taught Japanese architect Tadao Ando, the museum itself is a masterpiece, perched on one of the island's highest points, making the most of natural light and space. The day concludes with a private catamaran yacht ride to Zentsuji Temple, your final stop on the Shikoku pilgrimage, where a night in a traditional shukubo awaits.

On the third day, the special tour at the 75th temple of the 88 sacred sites of Shikoku offers a deep immersion into Japanese religion and culture. Led by a professional priest, the tour includes a precinct tour, morning service, and a visit to a mini-88-kenjo, blending spiritual exploration with the beauty of nature for an extraordinary experience.

Background and Highlights

Naoshima and Teshima:

Nestled in the Seto Inland Sea, Naoshima and Teshima are islands that have become synonymous with contemporary art and natural beauty. Renowned for their innovative art projects like the Benesse Art Site and the Setouchi Triennale, these islands seamlessly integrate art into their landscapes, creating a unique cultural experience. Naoshima boasts the iconic Benesse House and underground Chichu Art Museum, both masterpieces designed by architect Tadao Ando. Teshima, on the other hand, captivates with its Lemon House and expansive lemon orchards harmoniously blending with art installations. These islands provide a tranquil escape where art, nature, and architecture converge, leaving visitors with a lasting impression.

Shikoku Pilgrimage:

The Shikoku Pilgrimage, rooted in Buddhist tradition, encompasses the eighty-eight sacred temples scattered across the Shikoku region. Initiated by the revered monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi), this spiritual journey weaves through diverse landscapes, offering both religious significance and natural beauty. Pilgrims traverse mountains, coastal lines, and historic sites, connecting with the essence of Japanese Buddhism. Highlights include the sacred Kotohira-gu Shrine, renowned for its divine energy, and the cultural richness of Kagawa Prefecture, famed for its delectable Sanuki Udon. The pilgrimage provides a profound exploration of faith, history, and the breathtaking scenery of Shikoku, fostering a deep connection between the pilgrim and the land.
